Friday night at our house has a plan. We will pop some popcorn, gather drinks and snuggle up to watch a movie. It might not always happen, but this fall we are setting up to make it a weekly event – one my boys are really looking forward to. Last week we ended up doing it a little early as we had a treat from Netflix Canada arrive at our door. I suppose it doesn’t really matter what day it happens – just so long as it does.
It’s fall, the days are getting shorter and cooler and it just feels right to spend some time snuggled up together. My kids have always loved movie night, and a few weeks ago, this is what they decided upon for a family night. My younger son has become a bit obsessed with us all being together, so it does include two big dogs. Thankfully we’ve managed to assure him it’s ok to leave the fish where they are. My older son brings along his favourite stuffed animals, so it’s a packed house.
We set up our movie plan using Netflix, since it’s so easy to find something we like there. After much debate, we decided on Lego Ninjago and Lego DC Comics Justice League. These are actually episodes of the series, but we loved them.
I set up a little popcorn bar – with a twist (at least for us) Popcorn and butter were there, but we also had flavor shakers, candy, pretzels and the fun of mixing it up. I think the boys were just exited over the sugar, but that’s a whole different story.
It was easy to set it up and make it look fancy – and the kids loved it. I loved the shows, since they had just enough adult humour in them to make me smile.
Setting up a family tradition doesn’t have to be over the top – a board game night, a dog walking night, snuggles and books or a movie night. All are good – the important thing is spending your time with those you love.
